Can Pulling Out the Crown Save Battery on Quartz Watches?
Many watch enthusiasts own more than one watch, and it’s common to wear different watches seasonally—for instance, a metal bracelet watch in summer and a leather strap watch in winter. This naturally leads to some watches being left unworn for extended periods.
It’s widely known that quartz watches are powered by batteries, and leaving a watch running when not in use seems like a waste of battery life. So, the question arises: can pulling out the crown save battery on quartz watches?
The answer is no. It’s not advisable to pull out the crown of a quartz watch when it’s not being worn. The crown is a critical component for water resistance, and pulling it out for an extended period does not actually save battery. Moreover, this can allow moisture from the air to enter the watch, potentially causing oxidation of the movement and discoloration of the hands. Therefore, it’s best to avoid leaving the crown pulled out for long durations.
Regardless of whether it’s a quartz or mechanical watch, it’s not recommended to pull out the crown if the watch will be unused for some time. Mechanical watches should be wound once a month, and automatic watches should be worn periodically to wind the mainspring, ensuring the movement parts are not static for too long. For analog quartz watches, consider taking the watch to an authorized service center to remove the battery and check the watch’s water resistance.
