Top Ten Tips for Mechanical Watch MaintenanceMaintaining a mechanical watch requires attention to detail and a proactive approach to care. Below are ten essential tips to ensure your timepiece remains in pristine condition.
Tip One: The sweat on your hands can corrode the watch case. Stainless steel cases, being nickel-chromium alloys, have better corrosion resistance. Copper-based semi-steel cases corrode more easily with sweat exposure. Regularly wiping your watch with a soft cloth or using a plastic watch stand can prevent sweat-induced corrosion.
Tip Two: Avoid opening the back cover of your watch unnecessarily. Dust entering the movement can affect the watch’s functionality.
Tip Three: Do not store your watch in places with mothballs, as they can cause the watch oil to deteriorate.
Tip Four: Keep your watch away from amplifiers, speakers, and televisions to prevent magnetization.
Tip Five: For watches not worn for extended periods, wind them monthly. For automatic movements, gently swinging the watch for a few minutes or wearing it for a while can wind the movement, preventing parts from becoming static and maintaining performance.
Tip Six: If a mechanical watch becomes moist, wrap it in paper and bake it under a 40-watt bulb for 5 minutes or sunbathe for 2 hours to evaporate moisture. For quartz watches, use silica gel or calcium chloride for moisture absorption.
Tip Seven: Preserve the original packaging of your beloved watch. The protective box it comes in offers the safest haven against impacts and collisions when not in use, significantly reducing the risk of damage.
Tip Eight: Avoid wearing the same watch daily. Alternating between different watches not only enriches your style but also prevents dirt and body oils from accumulating on a single watch. Leather straps especially need careful maintenance to avoid frequent wear and tear.
Tip Nine: It’s best not to wear a watch while sleeping to avoid scratches and collisions that can damage the case.
Tip Ten: To refurbish a scratched watch crystal, apply a small amount of toothpaste on the crystal, add a few drops of water, and gently rub. This can remove scratches and make the crystal look new again.
By adhering to these maintenance tips, you can significantly extend the lifespan and preserve the beauty of your mechanical watch.
