Essential Tips Every Watch Enthusiast Must Know for Wearing a WatchLeather straps are a symbol of meticulous craftsmanship, hand-stitched by experienced artisans. When paired with a well-crafted watch, it elevates the allure of your timepiece. Typically, crocodile leather is used only on the outer surface of the strap. The inner layer is made of a different material, padded for added thickness at the head and tapering off towards the tail. Standard strap lengths are 70/110mm, with 6-7 holes for adjustment.
Caring for Your Leather Strap
1. If your strap begins to smell, lightly brush the dirty areas with a toothbrush dipped in soapy water, then wipe with a damp cloth. This process should be completed within 20 seconds to prevent water from soaking into the leather. Applying leather oil can also protect and fully maintain the strap.
2. Hardening of the strap is common over time. Exposure to moisture accelerates this process, while perspiration can erode and deform the leather, leading to hardness or even breakage. Avoid bending a hardened strap to prevent damage.
3. When attaching or removing your watch, be gentle to avoid pulling or stretching the strap too much. Avoid bending the strap back on itself at points where it’s typically folded, and try to minimize contact with hard surfaces that can wear down the strap’s surface.
4. Seasonal Wearing: Limit wearing leather-strapped watches in summer to avoid sweat damage, and prefer wearing them in winter. Before long-term storage, applying colorless mutton fat can help preserve the strap’s condition.
5. Don’t wear your strap too tightly; keeping it slightly loose reduces skin contact and sweat absorption.
Note: No matter the quality or care, leather aging is inevitable. If you notice breakage, replace the strap promptly to maintain your watch’s appearance and value. Worn straps can significantly downgrade the aesthetic and class of your watch, and may even result in losing it.
