How Long Before a Mechanical Watch Needs Winding? The Evolution of Mainsprings: Initially made from high-carbon steel, mainsprings in the past were prone to fatigue and quick torque loss, leading to potential breakage after several years. Today’s mechanical watches commonly use stainless steel or diamond composite materials, offering benefits like high strength, elasticity, fatigue resistance, and anti-corrosion properties. This innovation not only stores sufficient energy but also enhances the watch’s accuracy.
Impact of Mainspring Quality: The quality of a watch’s mainspring significantly affects its timekeeping. It should provide adequate, but not excessive, input torque. As the spring winds tightly, its torque increases, enlarging the balance wheel’s amplitude until the watch ceases activity when fully wound. Fluctuations in torque can cause inconsistencies in timekeeping, underscoring the importance of even power distribution.
Power Reserve Duration: Whether manually or automatically wound, the spring stores energy in the mainspring barrel, releasing it gradually. A fully wound mechanical watch can run for at least 30 hours, with higher-end models boasting power reserves of three days, seven days, fifteen days, or even longer.
Automatic vs. Manual Winding: Mechanical watches can be automatic (full or semi-automatic) or manual. Automatic watches require movement, utilizing an eccentric wheel driven by the wearer’s arm motion to wind the mainspring. Thus, these are sometimes referred to as “passively” automatic due to their reliance on user activity. If left unworn, the watch will eventually stop.
To activate a stopped automatic watch, set the time and manually wind it by turning the crown, ensuring it starts operating. Continuous wear maintains its operation; otherwise, it will stop running if left off for too long.
Understanding the intricacies of mechanical watches’ maintenance ensures their longevity and accuracy, keeping these timepieces ticking flawlessly for years to come.
