How to Extend the Lifespan of Your Mechanical WatchProper maintenance is key to prolonging the life of a mechanical watch. Unless specified as waterproof, avoid exposing your watch to water, as moisture can cause significant mechanical corrosion. Seawater, in particular, is highly damaging. Even water-resistant watches need their waterproof seals replaced annually due to wear and external factors like sweat and dust.
To prevent impact damage, consider having multiple watches for different activities: wear mechanical watches for static activities and sports watches for physical activities. This practice can significantly extend your watch’s service life.
Mechanical watches operate through gears and springs, which inevitably cause friction. Regular lubrication is necessary to minimize wear. Regular maintenance and cleaning are essential as watches accumulate sweat, dust, and debris over time. With proper care, a mechanical watch can last for decades.
Maintenance Tips:
1. Wind the watch once every 24 hours.
2. You can adjust the hands of a mechanical watch in either direction.
3. If the watch runs fast or slow, adjust the speed regulation screw on the back. Moving towards “-” slows it down, and towards “+” speeds it up. Each adjustment changes the time by 3-5 minutes.
4. For alarm functionality, set the alarm dial accurately and fully wind the alarm spring. After each use, rewind after at least one and a half hours.
5. To stop the alarm, press the alarm stop button for bell alarms or slide the stop lever for double bell alarms.
6. Keep your watch clean and away from humid, dusty environments, extreme temperatures, and strong magnetic fields.
7. Avoid harsh impacts, vibrations, and corrosive chemicals.
8. Ideally, have your watch professionally cleaned and oiled every two years to ensure longevity.Following these guidelines will help maintain the precision and reliability of your mechanical watch, ensuring it remains a timeless companion.
