Maintaining Automatic and Quartz Movements: Essential TipsAutomatic Mechanical Movements: Contrary to hand-wound mechanical watches, automatic mechanical watches wind themselves as you move. They harness the power generated by the movement of the rotor, which winds the mainspring. However, the thickness of these watches might be slightly more compared to their manually wound counterparts. To maintain their optimal performance and precision timing, it’s recommended to have your automatic watch serviced every two years. Regular service includes cleaning, oiling, and adjusting to ensure the watch operates at its best.
Quartz Movements: Quartz watches, known for their precision, have an allowed error range of ±15 seconds per month. Their operation is powered by a battery, which typically lasts between 12 to 24 months, depending on the watch’s movement. If your watch features an end-of-life indicator, the second hand will start jumping every four seconds to signal the need for a battery replacement. It’s crucial to replace the battery promptly to avoid damage to the movement. In Swiss watches, battery changes include water resistance testing and sealing replacements to ensure water resistance, with all repairs guaranteed for one year.
Quartz Movement Maintenance: For ladies’ watches, battery replacement is advised approximately every two years, and for men’s watches, every four years. Adhering to individual brand specifications during battery change is crucial, including water resistance tests and seal replacements, to maintain the watch’s water resistance. Delaying battery replacement when timekeeping slows can cause damage, so immediate action at an authorized service center is recommended.
Automatic Movement Care: Watches with an automatic winding mechanism can be worn continuously. The added automatic component, consisting of the oscillating weight and wheel, ensures the mainspring is adequately wound in any direction of movement. To ensure your automatic watch remains in top condition, a standardized service every two years, including cleaning, oiling, and adjustment, is essential.
By following these maintenance tips for both automatic and quartz movements, you ensure the longevity and precision of your cherished timepieces.
