This vision runs through every piece of our brand, fully demonstrating our relentless dedication to understanding and respecting the multifaceted aspects of time in different eras and civilizations.
— Mr. Guido Terreni, Global CEO of Parmigiani BrandMulticultural Perspectives and Diversity
In our view, calendars are not just measuring tools, but also reflect the face of civilization. This profound identification with calendars as a form of cultural diversity shines like a beacon on our design path, inspiring us to cleverly integrate the unique aspects of various societies into our exquisite timepieces. This not only praises each culture’s unique heritage but also pays high tribute to the immortal contribution of multiculturalism in shaping our collective perception of time. On this basis, we further pursue inclusivity in the watchmaking process, showcasing cultural diversity while also displaying the plurality of human experiences. For Parmigiani, inclusivity means cherishing and respecting the differences between cultures, while creating a broad platform that integrates various classical traditions, thereby facilitating increasingly vibrant exchanges and collisions between different cultures. In 2011, Michel Parmigiani was inspired by an antique pocket watch with an Arabic calendar, successfully creating the Hijri Calendar clock. Subsequently, with the brand’s exquisite craftsmanship, this exceptional clock was transformed into the Hijri Perpetual Calendar wristwatch, a new masterpiece that won the Innovation Prize at the 2020 Geneva High Watchmaking Grand Prix (GPHG). In 2023, Parmigiani officially released the Tonda PF series Hijri Perpetual Calendar wristwatch, featuring a new design language with a platinum case and a sleeker dial.
Today, Parmigiani launches a new Tonda PF series Hijri Perpetual Calendar wristwatch with a stainless steel case and a bright chrome green dial. The new watch interprets the Islamic calendar, invented by Muslim scholars and astronomers in the 8th century, through the rhythm of horological art. This calendar system allows historians to convert between Islamic and Gregorian dates, laying a solid foundation for the brand’s new Tonda PF series Hijri Perpetual Calendar wristwatch. The Hijri era begins in AD 622, when the Prophet Muhammad migrated from Mecca to Medina in present-day Saudi Arabia, a journey known as the Hijra.
Compared to the Gregorian (solar) and Chinese lunar calendars, the Hijri (lunar) calendar is based on the moon’s phases. In the Hijri calendar, a 30-year cycle includes 12 months of either 29 or 30 days, with 19 common years of 354 days and 11 leap years of 355 days.
Time Holds a Sacred Sensation
In the Hijri calendar, there are four sacred months. During these months, violence, war, or unlawful acts are prohibited, and people are encouraged to focus more on devotion and good deeds. The three consecutive sacred months are: the eleventh month, Dhul-Qa’dah (‘١١’), followed by the twelfth month, Dhul-Hijjah (‘١٢’), and the first month of the new year, Muharram (‘Ù¡’). December is the month for pilgrims to travel to Mecca, so the two months before and after are used to ensure that pilgrims can travel safely and complete their devout pilgrimage. The seventh month, Rajab (‘Ù§’), is the midpoint of the year, a time for peace and reflection before Ramadan, and for voluntary pilgrimage to Mecca. The red ‘Ù©’ on the month sub-dial represents Ramadan. During this month, Muslims follow the ancient tradition of fasting from dawn to sunset for 29 or 30 days. After Ramadan comes Eid al-Fitr, the first of two major Islamic holidays, followed by Eid Al-Adha on the tenth day of the last month.
Stainless Steel with Chrome Green Dial
The new Tonda PF series Hijri Perpetual Calendar wristwatch features a stainless steel case adorned with alternating satin and polished finishes, water-resistant up to 100 meters. The iconic fluted bezel is crafted from 950 platinum, paired with a stainless steel bracelet with a folding clasp, processed with the same techniques. The chrome green dial is hand-finished with a “grain d’orge” barley grain guilloché pattern. The hour markers and triangular hollowed hands are made of rhodium-plated 18K gold, while the second hand and calendar sub-dial pointers are made of rhodium-plated stainless steel.Islamic Calendar
The Tonda PF series Hijri Perpetual Calendar wristwatch is powered by the PF009 automatic winding movement, with a frequency of 28,800 vibrations/hour (4 Hz), providing a 48-hour power reserve. This intricate movement features beveled bridges. The skeletonized rotor is meticulously carved from platinum, polished and sandblasted. Like the case and dial, the rotor is finely decorated with Geneva waves and fish scales. The Tonda PF series Hijri Perpetual Calendar wristwatch integrates all calendar information on the dial. The sub-dial at 12 o’clock displays the 30-year cycle, with leap years shown in gold and common years in white. The sub-dial at 3 o’clock displays the months of the year, with the fasting month of Ramadan highlighted in bright red. Additionally, the sub-dial at 9 o’clock shows the days of the month, indicating whether it’s a 30-day or 29-day month through a window. White windows represent 29-day months. When a 30-day month arrives, a gold window is activated, displaying the digit 30 in gold, represented in Arabic as ‘Û³’. Finally, the sub-dial at 6 o’clock features a lapis lazuli moon phase display indicating the moon’s position in the northern and southern hemispheres.“Watchmaking should become a window through which we fully appreciate the historical and cultural treasures and philosophical essences that shape our perception of time passed down by nations.”
